Almost every morning, the ones where head doesn't feel like a rattled snow globe, I send my kids out the door with a morning mantra:
"Do something nice for someone today."
I want my kids to understand the importance of serving others. I want them to feel the leaping of their heart in their chest when they have made someone else happy. I want them to learn to put others before themselves. I believe this is the best recipe to be happy in life. It may not teach them to be successful but it will show them how to be happy. That's all I want for them.
I'm not sure if I am teaching it the right way but my kids are amazing. They surprise me when the remember to do kind things in the midst of singing the alphabet and swinging on swings. And I am the proudest Mom on this side of Target when they come and say,
"Mom, I did something nice! I gave someone one of my Oreo's because they said they like them."
Or
"I tied someone's shoe for him today because he was trying to but he didn't know how."
I mean so proud, that I get a lump in my throat and this weird watery substance in my eyes.

12 Splendid Notes:
Such a wonderful lesson to instill in your children. Kindness and the bravery to do something kind are wonderful attributes that too few people have.
You are such a great mom!
Really, I hope that when my daughter is school aged, she'll be that friendly to others.
So so SO cute.
I love that you have them do this every day- what a wonderful idea! I miss you! I want to see your baby bump!

After reading your post I got this "weird watery substance in my eyes". :)
You must be teaching the right way. Your kids ARE amazing because they have an AMAZING mom! So sweet! <3
This is absolutely amazing. I hope to instill the same kindness in my kids, it makes such a difference! I wonder how many days have been made as a direct result of something your kids have done:-)
that is very good! more kids these days need to be told that!
Still to this day, You ma dear are by far the kindest gal I have ever met! I have very fond memories of witnessing the random acts of kindness you have done for others! Truely one of the most Christ-like people I've ever had the pleasure to know!
How sweet!! What a great lesson!
